The summer heat can be dangerous
As a fellow helicopter dog mom, keeping my dogs cool and safe in the summer is my top priority! That's why I've put together this list of tips to help you keep your dog comfortable in the summer heat.
01. water is your friend!
The easiest (and most fun) way to keep your dog cool in the summer is by taking them somewhere they can swim and get in the water! Even if your dog isn't a fan of swimming, just getting their paws in can help them cool off and regulate their body temperature. Remember to not splash water on their back, this will actually trap heat and make them hotter - splash water on their tummy instead!
Bring their favorite toy or treats to motivate them into the water!
02. plan your walks around dusk & dawn
Keeping your walks to the coolest parts of the day will help immensely in keeping your dog comfortable. Try to walk in the first and last hour of light to beat the heat from the sun. You can even attach a light-up collar to them if you'll be walking in the dark!
03 - Set up a kiddie pool or cooling mat
Sometimes you have to get creative to keep your dog happy and comfortable in the summer! Kiddie pools are a great inexpensive option for dogs who like to get a little wet without worrying about the upkeep of a full-sized pool. Plus, this way you don't have to worry about blue-green algae or crowded beaches!
Cooling mats are a great alternative for inside your home or on the go. There are many available online and some use differing technology, so it may take some research to find the perfect one for your pup.
04. try paddle boarding
Paddle boarding with a dog is so much fun! It takes a bit of practice training them to get comfortable with the board, but if you have a confident dog who loves to swim it should be a no brainer! Once they get the hang of it, you'll be obsessed! Make sure you get your pup a life jacket for the inevitable slip every now and then, and practice pulling them back on the board from the water.
