Want to capture beautiful photos of your dog in Des Moines, Iowa but don't know where to go? These are some of my favorite locations for a dog photoshoot -- from a professional dog photographer!

#1: Arie den Boer Arboretum

First up on the list of best places to take pictures of your dog in Des Moines is the Arie den Boer Arboretum! This spot is absolutely stunning in the spring, for obvious reasons! Established in 1930, this is one of the largest collections of crabapple trees in the world with around 800 trees!

This spot is a favorite among locals in the spring, and the best time to come to see the flowers bloom is between the last week of April and the first week of May. I captured these shots in April 2023 and absolutely love holding dog photography sessions there every spring -- email me to schedule yours!

#2: water works park

The Des Moines Water Works Park has tons of space and trails to ride your bike, jog, or just take a stroll with your dog. But it's also the perfect area to get stunning photos of your dog! My favorite spot is specifically the coursing field, where AKC CAT (Coursing Ability Tests) are held every year where dogs test their ability to chase a lure through the large open field. I regularly photograph these events, so if this is something you're interested in please reach out to get pictures at your next event! I also love having regular sessions at this beautiful park because there is tons of open space to have an area to yourself, which is also great for reactive or nervous pups.

#3: Sycamore trails by the river

Sycamore Trail is part of a large system of beautiful trails that are popular for biking and hiking in Des Moines. If you walk about a half-mile down the lower trail, you will find several access points to walk right down to the Des Moines river! This is a great spot for any time of year, but especially for those hot summer days so your dog can cool off. Come here at sunset for an amazing photo session!

#4: Raccoon River PARK

Raccoon River Park is an amazing park with tons of different areas to enjoy: a dog park, a sandy swimming beach, a fishing pier, soccer fields, and even a walking/hiking trail! It sits right next to the Blue Heron Lake, which is great for paddle boarding, swimming, fishing, or just enjoying the sun. This is a great spot to get a variety of images during your photo session!
